How an Engagement Is Built
Every firm says the teaching is built around your child. None of them say what that means on a Tuesday afternoon. Here is what it means here.

Four firms will tell you the teaching is built around your child. None of them will tell you what that means on a Tuesday afternoon.
It means four specific things, each of which costs us something. That is how you tell a method from a marketing line: a real one has a price attached, and you can check whether it is being paid.
1. The plan comes after the first lesson
We teach before we propose.
You cannot route a journey without knowing where the student is standing, and a plan written from a transcript is a guess with a letterhead. A transcript tells you a student scored 62% in a paper. It does not tell you whether they lost those marks because they cannot rearrange an equation, because they ran out of time, or because they understood the physics perfectly and misread the question.
Those are three different problems with three different fixes, and no amount of reading the report will separate them. Teaching the student for an hour will.
So the first session is a diagnostic, and it is a real lesson — not an assessment, not a sales call. The plan is written afterwards, by the person who taught it.
What that hour actually involves is mostly listening. A tutor sets a problem slightly below where the student is supposed to be and watches how they approach it: where they start, what they write down first, which step they do silently because it is automatic, and which step they pause before. The pause is the information. A student who hesitates before every substitution is telling you something different from one who substitutes fluently and then cannot interpret the answer.
None of that shows up in a mark. Two students can score the same 62% for entirely unrelated reasons, and the plans they need share almost nothing.
What it costs us: we commit teaching time before there is an agreed engagement, and occasionally that hour tells us we are not the right practice. We would rather find that out in the first hour than the tenth.
2. The sequence is the student's, not the syllabus's
A student who is fluent in mechanics and lost in waves does not need to begin at chapter one.
Syllabuses are written in the order a subject is best explained to a room of thirty people who all start from nothing. Almost no individual student is in that position. They arrive having understood some of it well, some of it partially, and one specific thing not at all — and it is very often the not-at-all that is quietly failing everything downstream of it.
The pattern repeats across subjects. A student who cannot confidently rearrange an equation will struggle with every topic that requires it, and the report will say they are weak at mechanics, then weak at electricity, then weak at thermodynamics — three verdicts describing one gap. A student who never quite understood what a mole is will find every calculation in chemistry harder than it should be, and will be told they need to practise more. More practice is precisely the wrong prescription: it drills the workaround deeper.
Find that place and the topics after it frequently resolve on their own, because they were never conceptually difficult. They were built on something missing.
So we start where the gap actually is and work outward from it. Sometimes that means going back two years before going forward one term. It is worth saying plainly that this is uncomfortable — a fifteen-year-old sent back to something they covered at thirteen usually assumes it is a judgement on them. Part of the tutor's job in the first few weeks is making clear that it is the opposite: we go back because the ceiling is high, not because it is low.
What it costs us: it looks slower for the first few weeks, and it takes a conversation with a parent who reasonably expected us to start at the current topic.
3. The lesson changes inside the lesson
A tutor who finishes the plan they walked in with was not listening.
What the student says in the first ten minutes decides what the next fifty are for. A student who answers a warm-up question correctly but hesitates in a particular way has just shown you something more useful than the answer itself — and a tutor working through a fixed lesson plan will walk straight past it.
Here is what that looks like in practice. A student is asked what the acceleration of a ball is at the top of its flight, and says zero. The wrong answer, and an ordinary lesson marks it wrong and moves on. But the reasoning underneath it is not wrong at all: the ball really is momentarily at rest, and the student has correctly noticed that. They have made one sound observation and drawn one inference too many from it — they have collapsed velocity is zero into everything is zero.
Marking that wrong teaches nothing, because the student was not being careless. It teaches them that physics is a series of facts they failed to memorise, which is the belief that makes people give up on the subject. What has to happen instead is a question: if the acceleration really were zero at the top, what would the ball do in the very next instant? The student answers that one themselves, and in answering it they find the error without ever being told it.
That exchange takes about ninety seconds and it cannot be planned. It depends entirely on the specific wrong answer the student gave, which nobody knew in advance.
This is the difference between a lesson and a delivery. It is also the single hardest thing to hire for: it needs a tutor who knows the material well enough to abandon their own preparation without losing the thread, and who is comfortable being led somewhere they did not intend to go. Subject knowledge is necessary and nowhere near sufficient. Plenty of people with doctorates cannot do it, and some very good schoolteachers can do it in their sleep.
What it costs us: it makes tutors harder to find and lessons harder to standardise. There is no lesson plan we can hand to a new tutor and expect the same result, because the plan is not where the value is. It is the main reason we run one search per family rather than allocating from a bench.
4. One tutor holds the whole picture
The same person who taught the diagnostic writes the reports, talks to the school, and prepares the final paper.
Nothing is handed between people who have never met the student. A tutor who has to rebuild their picture of a student every term never gets past the surface of what is wrong — and rebuilding is exactly what rotation forces, however good each individual tutor is.
The thing that gets lost in a handover is never the syllabus position. That transfers fine; it is a line in a document. What does not transfer is the accumulated set of small observations that took a term to gather — that this student says "I get it" when they mean "I would like to stop talking about it", that they are much stronger on paper than aloud, that a particular kind of question makes them freeze for reasons that have nothing to do with the mathematics. A new tutor cannot be handed those. They have to earn them again, and that costs another term.
Continuity is not a scheduling convenience. It is the thing that makes the first three points compound rather than reset.
What it costs us: we can only take on a student if we have a tutor who can commit to the full horizon of the engagement. When we do not, we say so.
What this looks like from your side
You will meet one tutor, by name, in conversation. They will teach your child before anyone writes a plan. The plan will start wherever the gap is rather than wherever the syllabus is. And the person who wrote it will still be the person teaching in a year's time.
